INDENTIFICATION WITH THE EGO : THE CAUSE OF HUMAN SUFFERING
Lower Vibrations and Egoic Consciousness
Throughout human history, emotions—such as shame, guilt, greed, envy, hatred, jealousy, and insecurity—have been deeply entwined with the human experience. These emotions have fueled much of our suffering and, despite millions of years of evolution, continue to bind individuals and societies to cycles of fear, pain, exploitation, conflict, injustice, inequality, and disconnection.
These negative states of being, often referred to as lower vibrational energies, stem from an egoic consciousness, where the individual identifies with the separate self, rather than understanding the interconnectedness of all beings. Egoic consciousness reinforces the illusion of separation—an artificial divide that fosters competition, isolation, and the pursuit of power at the expense of others. This mindset is rooted in the false belief that we are isolated from one another and the world around us, leading to feelings of insecurity and fear of scarcity.
In turn, this fragmentation of consciousness shapes human behavior and contributes to systemic issues, such as inequality, oppression, and social injustice. The ego, in its pursuit of validation and self-preservation, fuels the inner conflicts and external divisions that perpetuate suffering on both individual and collective levels.
At a collective level, these lower vibrational states are often perpetuated through direct and indirect assertion of power—by human leadership that has by and large been narcissistic, self-serving, and greed-driven supported by outdated systems which support it. Throughout history, forces of power have thrived on division, manipulation, and exploitation, seeking to maintain control and influence through fear and insecurity.
STORY OF THE PLANET and COLLECTIVE SUFFERING:
On the planet , at the collective level, these lower vibrational states are often sustained by narcissistic, self-serving, and greed-driven individuals in positions of power. Historically, many in power have thrived by fostering division, manipulation, and exploitation, maintaining control through fear and insecurity. The leadership, driven by egoic motives, create an environment of competition and divide-and-conquer, deepening societal fragmentation.
Forces of power by amplifying fear and insecurity, force individuals and communities into a continuous cycle of egoic consciousness. Their actions have prioritized self-interest and personal gain over the well-being of the collective. For generations the planet has been held back the blind race of accumulating wealth, power, and control, Today we live in a planet that is increasingly ravaged by environmental degradation, economic disparity, social unrest and run by systems that reinforce of inequality, poverty, and oppression by dividing society for the selfish interest of a few.

In Eckhart Tolle's book The New Earth, the concept of moving away from lower vibrations and healing is a core element of the spiritual transformation he describes. Tolle speaks extensively about how we, as individuals and as a collective, are called to transcend the lower, egoic levels of consciousness to awaken to a higher state of being—what he refers to as the creation of a "New Earth."
In The New Earth, Tolle explains that much of the suffering in the world arises from identification with the ego, which operates at a lower vibrational frequency. The ego is fueled by fear, greed, judgment, anger, and attachment to material possessions, status, and identity. These are all considered lower vibrations because they keep us trapped in a cycle of negative emotions, stress, and disconnection from our true essence.
According to Tolle:
- Lower vibrations are linked to feelings such as fear, anger, guilt, shame, and resentment—emotions tied to the ego's grip on our lives.
- The egoic mind thrives on separation, division, and comparison, creating a sense of "us versus them," which perpetuates suffering.
- When we remain in these lower states of consciousness, we continue to react from a place of unconsciousness, creating patterns of disharmony within ourselves and the world.
Tolle teaches that healing the lower vibrations involves becoming aware of these egoic tendencies and stepping beyond them, which allows us to experience a higher state of consciousness—one that is rooted in peace, acceptance, and unity.
The Shift to a Higher Vibration:
In the journey toward healing, Tolle advocates for a spiritual awakening—a shift in consciousness. This shift involves recognizing that the true self is not the ego, but the awareness that underlies all experience. By identifying with this higher consciousness, we move beyond lower vibrational states.
Here are some ways Tolle explains that we can heal and move away from lower vibrations:
1. Awareness of the Present Moment:
A central theme in The New Earth is the importance of being fully present in the moment. Tolle calls this "presence" or "the power of now"—a state of awareness that allows us to step outside the confines of the ego. When we are fully present, we break the habitual patterns of negative thinking, emotional reactivity, and fear-based actions that come from lower vibrations.
- Healing: By practicing mindfulness and focusing on the present moment, we dissolve the mental and emotional patterns that keep us stuck in lower states of consciousness. Awareness itself is a form of healing because it allows us to transcend the egoic mind and connect with the stillness and peace beneath it.
2. Acceptance and Surrender:
Tolle teaches that acceptance is crucial for moving away from lower vibrational states. Acceptance does not mean passive resignation but the recognition that what is happening in the present moment is as it is—without judgment or resistance.
- Healing: Surrendering to the present moment allows us to let go of the mental resistance that causes suffering. When we stop fighting reality and accept things as they are, we experience a shift into higher vibrational states of peace and equanimity.
3. Disidentification from the Ego:
One of the key practices in The New Earth is disidentifying from the ego. The ego thrives on separation and comparison. It constantly seeks validation, control, and superiority over others. By seeing through the ego's illusions, we begin to dissolve its hold on us.
- Healing: Tolle suggests that we observe the ego without attaching to it. Recognizing when the ego is at work—whether it is trying to protect our identity, create conflict, or react from a place of fear—can help us step into a higher state of awareness. The more we disidentify from the ego, the more we naturally move toward higher vibrations of peace, love, and connection.
4. Living with Compassion and Non-Judgment:
Another way to heal lower vibrations is by practicing compassion and non-judgment. The ego often operates through judgment, comparison, and criticism—both toward others and ourselves. This leads to lower vibrational energy, creating division and suffering.
- Healing: By replacing judgment with compassion and cultivating an attitude of understanding, we raise our vibration. Compassion helps us connect with others on a deeper level, recognizing the shared humanity we all experience. Through this, we shift from separation to unity.
5. Connection to the Field of Consciousness:
Tolle describes how the universal consciousness or “source energy” is the underlying field of awareness that connects all beings. It is the foundation of life itself, beyond form and individual identity.
- Healing: By becoming more attuned to this higher consciousness, we align with the vibrational frequency of love, peace, and unity. This connection allows us to transcend the limitations of the ego and experience the flow of life without resistance, bringing us into a higher vibrational state that supports healing.
The New Earth and Collective Awakening:
Tolle also emphasizes that moving away from lower vibrations isn’t just an individual journey; it’s a collective one. As more individuals awaken to higher consciousness, the collective energy of humanity shifts as well. He speaks of the creation of a New Earth, which is a global shift in consciousness—one where people move away from egoic, destructive behaviors and towards a collective state of peace, cooperation, and love.
- This transformation requires humanity to transcend old patterns of fear, greed, and competition, replacing them with compassion, understanding, and unity.
- The New Earth is not a physical place but a state of consciousness where individuals live in harmony with themselves, each other, and the planet.
Practical Ways to Heal and Raise Vibration:
Tolle offers several practical steps in The New Earth to help individuals raise their vibration and heal from the lower states of consciousness:
- Practice mindfulness: Regularly bring your awareness to the present moment, free from judgment and mental distractions.
- Meditation: Quiet the mind through meditation to connect with the stillness within.
- Self-reflection: Observe your emotions and thoughts without identifying with them. Let them come and go without attachment.
- Focus on love and compassion: Cultivate an open heart and treat others with kindness, knowing that love is the highest vibrational energy.
- Live with purpose: Align your actions with your higher self and contribute to the collective well-being of the Earth.
In The New Earth, Eckhart Tolle offers a vision of healing that goes beyond individual well-being, pointing to a collective transformation in humanity's consciousness. By moving away from the lower vibrations of the ego, we can begin to experience higher states of peace, love, and unity. This healing journey involves becoming present, letting go of the ego, cultivating compassion, and living in alignment with the universal consciousness that connects us all.
Ultimately, Tolle teaches that the creation of a New Earth begins with the spiritual awakening of each individual, and this awakening is the key to healing and transforming the world. By healing ourselves, we contribute to the healing of the planet and create a collective vibration of love, peace, and higher consciousness.
